It appears a Chatham man opted to celebrate Canada Day a little early, and a little violently, trashing his apartment and earning a visit from the police.

According to Chatham-Kent police, a man got into an argument about 8:30 p.m. June 30 with someone he’d been drinking with for the day. He left and walked home with a beer in his hand.

Police say he damaged the door to his apartment building, smashed a beer bottle in the lobby and began trashing his own apartment.

He started arguing with his wife, according to police, prompting a visit from the local constabulary.

As officers entered his apartment, police say the man then grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter. Rather than put the knife down, as the officer told him to do, the man instead put it in his back pocket. But he was arrested without incident.

During a search, police say they found marijuana.

A 26-year-old Chatham man is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, drug possession and two counts of mischief.
