In its latest push to battle distracted driving, Chatham-Kent OPP laid 38 charges during a recent one-week blitz.

Between March 14 and 20, 35 people were charged for using hand-held devices while driving, while three others face distraction-related carless driving charges.

Police say last year, 288 people died on roads in Ontario patrolled by the OPP. Driver inattention was a factor in 73 of those crashes, compared to 46 impaired-related deaths.

The fine for distracted driving is $280.
