Getting over stereotypes

What mental picture do you get when you think about developing countries? Do you picture safe, clean and sanitary? I’m guessing not. I am just a guilty as the next person when it comes to stereotypes and preconceptions. My time here in Nica has certainly changed a lot of those thoughts, and I hope it has made me much more open minded. Allow me to walk you through my thought process as I decided on this topic for a blog post.

Just over a week ago I made the leap and got my first tattoo. Yup, that’s right, I got a tattoo in Nicaragua. Now what image pops to your mind when I say that? One friend said to me “why not just go to a Mexican prison to get inked up while you’re at it?”. Almost EVERYBODY that I told about it said something along the lines of “is it clean, and sterile? how do you know you won’t get a disease?”. My response to them was “I actually asked them to use the old rusty needles instead of new ones… I love excitement!” (insert sarcasm font here!)

Editor’s note: Adam and Kathy Vandermey sold most of their worldy possessions and moved to Nicaragua from the Blenheim area this past fall. They are writing regular blogs about their experiences in the Central American country, and we feature them about once a month on our Voice website.
