There can be only one.
That’s the vibe from two well-known local mutual insurance companies.
Kent & Essex Mutual Insurance and Maple Mutual recently announced they will merge, based on votes by their respective policy members at two separate special general meetings.
This followed the boards of directors from each firm approving the idea of forming the Kent Essex Maple Mutual Insurance Company (KEM).
Officials said, in a media release, that this will benefit policyholders, staff, broker partners, agents and the communities served. Both offices will remain open in Chatham and Dresden, and personnel won’t change.
The amalgamation will come into effect Jan. 1, 2027.
“Both the Chatham and Dresden offices will remain open as important contributors to KEM Mutual, the policyholders we serve, and the communities we will continue to support,” the companies said in a media release.
Upon amalgamation, the existing Kent & Essex CEO, Kevin Konecny, will become the president & CEO of KEM Mutual. Maple’s existing CEO, Rob Pearson, will also assist as needed.
“We are grateful to all policyholders who have supported each of us over the years, and we look forward to your continued support as we undertake this exciting new chapter in supporting mutual insurance in a place we call home,” the companies said in their media release.
