Cultural nominations open

The CK Cultural Hall of Fame is 44 names long and growing, and it is looking for advice on who to add to it this year.

The council wants the public to determine who is next. Nominations are open.

Now in its fifth year, this local award celebrates the impact people from Chatham-Kent have on global arts and culture.

The CK Cultural Hall of Fame is presented by the CK Arts Council (CKAC).

The Hall of Fame celebrates individuals whose passion and talent have shaped not only our local landscape, but also Canadian and world culture. Honourees include Shae-Lyn Bourne, Michelle Wright, Sylvia Tyson, June Caldwell, Robertson Davies and many more.

“The number of world-renowned people who got their start in Chatham-Kent is staggering,” said Vicki McFarland, CKAC interim chair, in a media release. “However, the Cultural Hall of Fame is not just about the luminaries, it is also about recognizing the individuals who built our cultural organizations, nurtured and mentored the next generations, and invested their talent and passion into creating a cultural landscape rich with music, visual art, dance, performance, and writers.”

“The Hall of Fame is truly a community project,” says Lee Highgate, CK Cultural Hall of Fame committee chair. “Your direct input via the nomination process keeps the Cultural Hall of Fame relevant and vibrant. We are looking for recommendations of individuals and groups across six artistic disciplines – dance, literary arts, music, theatre arts, visual arts, and cultural builders.”

The committee will select individuals from the six categories, and nominations can include living and deceased individuals who will be recognized as legacy recipients. Inductees will have their photo and biography mounted on a plaque to be on permanent display at the Chatham Cultural Centre.

Awards will be presented at the CKAC’s annual CK Cultural Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Celebration scheduled for Oct. 22.
