Man charged over firearm storage
A local man faces nine firearms-related charges stemming from an investigation that began two months ago.
On Feb. 24, Chatham-Kent police were called to stand by and keep the peace as a homeowner searched their Wallaceburg residence following the eviction of a man and woman.
Officers discovered two firearms hidden between the mattress and headboard. Both firearms were found without the required safety locks, police say, and one was identified as a prohibited weapon due to alterations made to it.
A subsequent query with the Canadian Firearms Registry revealed that neither the man nor the woman held valid firearms licenses, police say. On top of that, the man was bound by a Prohibition Order prohibiting him from possessing any firearms or ammunition for life.
Despite efforts by the police to locate them, both parties remained at large. A warrant was issued for their arrest.
On Tuesday, the man was located and arrested on Duncan Street in Wallaceburg.
A 39-year-old Chatham-Kent man is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm; unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm; possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized; possession of a prohibited firearm knowing that its possession is unauthorized; possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition; tampering with a serial number; two counts of careless storage of a firearm; and four counts of possession contrary to a prohibition order.
A 40-year-old Chatham-Kent woman remains on the wanted list.
He wasn’t supposed to be there
A Chatham man faces a number of charges after police received a distressing 911 call Tuesday.
Officers arrived at the scene to find a man inside the home, “exhibiting concerning behaviour,” including damaging drywall with pliers.
The officers opted to arrest the man for the victim’s safety. It turns out the man was bound by a probation order issued just a week prior involving the same victim.
A 37-year-old Chatham man is charged with failing to comply, mischief, uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
