Shoplifting complaint leads to drug arrest
A local man faces drug and theft charges after someone tried to make off with stolen merchandise on Wednesday, according to Chatham-Kent police.
They received a call about 8:30 a.m. from a Grand Avenue West business. A man reportedly went to make off with about $350 in goods, but was confronted, and dropped the items and fled.
Police say they located the suspect about five hours later. Following a short chase on foot, officers slapped on the cuffs.
As the officers searched the man, police say they found a rolled-up piece of tinfoil containing a white substance suspected to be fentanyl. They also found drug paraphernalia and packing materials.
A Chatham man, 36, is charged with theft, possession of stolen property, resisting a peace officer, escaping lawful custody, and possession of a controlled substance.

A Chatham man is up on new charges following an altercation with police Wednesday evening.
About 11 p.m., officers went to pull over a vehicle on Prince Street in Chatham. Police say the driver pulled into a driveway and then fled on foot.
The officers gave chase and apprehended their suspect when the main failed to get into a nearby residence. He turned and surrendered, police say.
A Chatham man, 32, was scooped up on an outstanding warrant for fraud, and is also charged with driving while under suspension.
