The Lambton Kent District School Board has appointed a new superintendent of education.
Effective April 14, Eryn Smit will assume the post as superintendent of education in charge of Indigenous education/equity, diversity and justice.
Smit, the current principal at Cathcart Boulevard Public School in Sarnia, brings a wealth of experience to the role. The veteran educator has served as the principal at Chatham’s Victor Lauriston Public School, P.E. McGibbon Public School in Sarnia and Zone Township Central School in Bothwell.
Going forward, Smit will act as a liaison with the four First Nations communities that partner with the board, as well as oversee Ministry of Education initiatives relating to the board’s Indigenous Action Plan, the Indigenous teacher education program, as well as other efforts aimed at promoting fairness and justice throughout the system.
Smit has also worked as an International Education Principal, has served in a variety of leadership roles with the Ontario Principal’s Council, and has coordinated the Indigenous Teacher Education Program through Queen’s University.
“We are thrilled to welcome Eryn as our new superintendent of education,” said incoming director of education Gary Girardi. “Eryn’s dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion, along with a proven track record of leadership and innovation, will be invaluable as we continue to build on our strategic priorities and support the success of every student, every day.”
