No one was injured in an afternoon fire Wednesday at the tent encampment in Rotary Park near the Third Street Bridge in Chatham.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which broke out around 3 p.m.

“Within minutes of arriving at the scene, firefighters swiftly evacuated propane tanks from the vicinity and extinguished the flames,” Chatham-Kent Fire officials said in a media release.

Police had blocked off Thames Street in the immediate vicinity to reroute vehicles around the site.

The cause is undetermined, but fire officials remind people to “ensure safe use of propane heaters, never use outdoor heaters indoors, ensure proper ventilation, keep heaters away from flammable materials, and always follow manufacturer instructions.”
