Assault charges

It began with a chilling 911 call where a woman was heard crying and a man yelling, and ended with a Chatham man facing numerous intimate partner violence charges.

Police received the call Friday night after 10 p.m. but no one was speaking on other end of the line, other than the crying and the yelling.

Officers traced the call to a Park Avenue West location. They attended, found a 57-year-old female victim and charged a 54-year-old man.

Police allege the man had assaulted her, causing a head injury.

He is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats.

Purse snatched, woman charged

A Chatham woman faces charges after an elderly woman reported her purse had been stolen on the weekend.

Police got the call Saturday afternoon and responded to Riverview Drive in Chatham. The victim, 72, said her purse was taken.

Officers investigated and found that a series of unauthorized credit card transactions had occurred, which led police to arrest a 28-year-old Chatham woman.

She faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime and theft.

Police say she was also wanted on outstanding warrants for two counts of fraud and two counts of using a stolen credit card.

Light fingers

A Chatham woman faces theft charges after someone tried to leave a local store without paying for $181 worth of items Friday night.

Police say the incident took place at a store on St. Clair Street in Chatham shortly after 9 p.m. Someone loaded up on items and bypassed the checkout, police say.

Officers tracked down their suspect a short distance away and recovered all items.

A 32-year-old Chatham woman is charged with theft and possession of stolen property.

On Sunday, a similar situation took place in Wallaceburg.

At about 3:25 p.m. at a McNaughton Avenue business, a man stole nearly $280 in goods, police say, leaving the store without paying.

An employee provided a description of the individual, and, after a brief foot pursuit, the police were able to identify and apprehend the accused.

A 27-year-old Chatham man is charged with theft and possession of stolen goods.
