It started with an August break in, and three arrests later, a Chatham man is still waiting for his day in court.
On Aug. 6, 2024, someone broke into a home and stole an estimated $67,000 in property. Police investigated and identified a 55-year-old Chatham man as a suspect.
The continuing investigation revealed the man was also involved in selling the stolen goods, police say.
That property was recovered by police.
Officers tracked down the suspect and charged him with possession of stolen property and trafficking in stolen goods.
Fast forward two months. Police performed a bail compliance check on the suspect to see if he was adhering to his overnight curfew of being in his residence between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
It turns out, he moved, and did not notify police. That resulted in two charges of failing to comply with his release conditions.
On Feb. 20 of this year, the same man was to appear in court. Police say he failed to show up, and a warrant was again issued for his arrest.
Exactly one month later, on Thursday morning, police say he showed up at the courthouse and was promptly arrested.
However, he is out again with a May 1 court date.
Charges pending against the man, police say, include break and enter, theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property, trafficking in stolen goods and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
