A road closed is a road closed

It’s challenging to investigate a traffic accident when other drives ignore road closure signs around the site and potentially put others in danger.

That’s the word from Chatham-Kent police in the wake of a fatal crash on the weekend on Talbot Trail.

Police officials said they had closed the road between Goulet Road and Kendall Road as they investigated the incident which claimed the life of a 37-year-old Merlin man.

Numerous drivers ignored the road closure signage and proceeded along Talbot Trail, police said.

As a result, officers issued seven tickets and gave three warnings to people who opted to drive around the signage.

“Some were approaching the scene at speeds of 80 km/h or higher, putting not only our first responders at risk but also other motorists and pedestrians,” police officials said. “Driving past barricades not only jeopardizes the safety of everyone involved, but it can also disrupt essential evidence gathering and traumatize those who inadvertently witness the aftermath of a collision.”

It is an offence to disobey road closure signs. Moving barricades or driving around them can lead to a fine of $110 and three demerit points.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash continues. If anyone has any information to assist, they are asked to contact Kristen Charron at KristenC@chatham-kent.ca or 519-355-1092.
