Stolen goods, false name … not good

Two people face charges after items walked out of a Chatham store on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called shortly before 3 p.m. to a business on St. Clair Street near Pioneer Line over a theft.

Police say a man entered the store and filled two carts with merchandise. The man left the store with the merchandise without making any attempts to pay for the items, police say.

By using the information received regarding vehicle and direction of travel, officers were able to locate the vehicle on Highway 40 and pulled it over south of Claymore Line. During the interaction, the man provided the officer with a false name, police say.

Once he was positively identified, the officer learned the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court.

Further investigation revealed a female passenger was also wanted on an outstanding warrant.

A 40-year-old Wallaceburg man faces the following charges: theft, possession of stolen property, obstructing police, failing to attend court, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

A 41-year-old Walpole Island woman is charged with three counts of operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.
Assault

A Wallaceburg man faces charges after a woman was assaulted early Friday morning in Chatham.

Police got the call shortly after 2:30 a.m. over a disturbance on Taylor Avenue.

Officers learned a woman and a man were arguing, but it took a nasty turn when the man damaged the woman’s property and assaulted her, police say.

Further investigation revealed the man was on conditions not to communicate or be in the vicinity of the woman.

The man left prior to police arrival but was located a short distance away and arrested.

A 32-year-old Wallaceburg man was held pending a bail hearing. He is charged with failing to comply with a release order, assault, obstructing the police and two counts of mischief.

Stolen vehicle recovered

Parking by the river turned out to not be a good idea for an alleged car thief.

At 6:15 p.m., Thursday, police responded to a suspicious vehicle parked by the Thames River on Thames Street in Chatham. Details of the vehicle were provided, and it was confirmed the vehicle had been stolen from Windsor. Officers were also advised the vehicle was occupied.

Police arrived and attempted to arrest the man. After a brief foot chase and struggle, the man was taken into custody.

Upon a search incident to arrest, the man was found in possession of numerous bank cards.

A 28-year-old Ontario man is charged with possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
