Stolen church door handles recovered

Two men face charges after someone stole two 150-year-old door handles from a church on Wellington Street in Chatham.

Police got the call Thursday morning. Investigation led to the arrest of one 38-year-old man, and a 31-year-old man both from Chatham and known to police, who were identified to be the ones in possession of the stolen property.

Matters didn’t end there. As the younger man was being arrested, police say he resisted. And during a search of that man, officers found what they believe is an illegal substance.

As a result of these findings, the 31-year-old man is charged with possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and drug possession.

The 38-year-old man is charged with possession of stolen property.

Church broken into

Sometime Thursday to Friday, someone forced their way into a church on Lacroix Street in Chatham.

The thief entered through a window, and did about $200 in damage just getting inside.

Intimate partner violence

A Chatham man faces charges in connection to a case of abuse, police say.

On Thursday, shortly before 10 a.m., police received a report of the intimate partner violence involving a 31-year-old Chatham man and a 24-year-old Chatham woman.

Through investigation, officers say the man assaulted and threatened his former girlfriend’s life while also destroying some of her property.

The man was located and arrested. He is charged with assault, assault cause bodily harm, uttering threats and mischief.

Police were called out for another incident later that day.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., police received a report of an incident involving intimate partner violence in Chatham involving a 63-year-old Chatham woman and a 41-year-old Chatham man.

Through investigation, police say a 63-year-old Chatham woman assaulted her former boyfriend.

The woman was located and arrested.

She has been charged with one count of domestic related assault.

Crash leads to impaired charge

With the provincial government working to make alcoholic beverages even more accessible, another local resident faces impaired driving charges.

Witnesses report seeing a vehicle driving erratically on Base Line Road in Wallaceburg before hearing a loud bang. Police responded about 1:50 a.m. and found the site of the single-vehicle crash and found the driver.

The investigating officer believed the 25-year-old Chatham man driving to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested him. He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Headquarters for processing and a breath test.

The man was charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit.

Trespassed…again…arrested

Owners of a Tecumseh Road business called the cops Thursday morning to get an all-too-familiar face removed from their property.

Police responded and learned an unwanted male was on the property, and that he had been trespassed previously and on conditions not to attend.

Officers located the 49-year-old Chatham male on the property and arrested him for one count of failing to comply with probation order.

A 49-year-old Chatham man has a future court date.
