Chatham man arrested for hate crimes

A 19-year-old Chatham man faces numerous charges in connection to what police are calling hate-motivated incidents.

The incidents, according to Chatham-Kent police, targeted local Muslims.

Police got called to Prince Street North in Chatham on July 30 for several incidents.

As a result, the Chatham man, 19, is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of uttering threats, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and mischief under $5,000. He appeared in court Wednesday, and will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance Aug. 7.

Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service have been in contact with leaders from the Chatham-Kent local Muslim community, and have updated them on the investigation and have offered supports.
