He tried, and failed, to flee
These automatic license plate readers are making it tough on some people, especially ones who are banned from driving.
Case in point: Early Tuesday morning, shortly before 1:30 a.m., an officer on patrol was alerted by their automatic plate reader, and conducted a traffic stop on Lacroix Street in Chatham.
The vehicle stopped on Emma Street and the driver attempted to flee on foot, police say.
After a short foot pursuit, the man was taken into custody.
Upon a search incident to arrest the man was found in possession of suspected fentanyl.
Officers also confirmed the man was prohibited from driving as a result of driving convictions. He had also been released from custody for the same offence.
A 35-year-old Chatham man is charged with driving under suspension, possession of a controlled substance and six counts of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Assault arrest
A man police had sought since mid-July is in custody.
Police investigated an incident on Young Street in Tilbury on July 16. They learned the man argued with another man, but matters turned violent when he struck the other man, police say.
The man left prior to police arrival and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
However, police located the man on Grand Avenue East in Chatham on Monday and arrested him.
While in police custody, the man damaged equipment, police say. He faces charges of assault and mischief.
Courting another missed day in court
Chatham-Kent police scooped up a suspect Monday morning who had been wanted on a warrant since late 2023.
In October, a man was arrested and charged for the theft of a vehicle found in Thamesville. He was booked and released with a future court date, for which police say he never attended.
A warrant was issued for his arrest.
Fast forward to Monday. Police found their suspect on Austin Line in Orford Township, and arrested him.
So, after spending the past nine months having avoided his last scheduled court appearance, a 41-year-old Moraviantown man, charged with possession of stolen property, was released with a future court date.
Threats uttered; charges laid
Hot weather can lead to hot tempers. On Monday morning, police responded to Canterbury Street in Chatham for a threat investigation.
Officers learned a man approached a homeowner and, without provocation, threatened to harm them, police say.
The 29-year-old Chatham-Kent man was located and arrested and short distance away. He is charged with uttering threats.
