Youth charged with assault

Third Street in Chatham is not a long street. In fact, it’s about a block long and runs right past Chatham-Kent police headquarters.

That said, a youth faces charges after a woman at a business on Third Street was assaulted about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police responded and learned a female youth argued with the woman, and it escalated when the youth pushed the woman to the ground, police say.

A 16-year-old Chatham youth is charged with assault.

Fraud charges over benefit claims

A man is facing fraud charges after police say someone tried to make more than $8,000 in benefits claims that turned out to be fraudulent.

The investigation began in early April when the benefits provider notified Chatham-Kent police.

On July 2, just after 4 p.m., police arrested the suspect, who is charged with fraud over $5,000.

Assault suspect arrested

A Tuesday morning knock on the door by police led to the arrest of an assault suspect.

Chatham-Kent police went to the suspect’s home about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, and left with a man in custody.

It all relates to a June 18 incident. Police responded to Gregory Drive West in Chatham for an assault investigation.

It was determined that a man attended the home of the victim to address a situation that occurred between the man’s daughter and another female youth, police say. The confrontation escalated when the man was belligerent and acted aggressively towards the youth’s mother.

The altercation escalated when the man assaulted the woman and pushed her backwards, which caused her to knock another woman to the ground, police say. Both women sustained minor physical injury.

During the altercation the man also fell forward, causing him to sustain minor physical injury to his shin.

The man left prior to police arrival. A warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to turn himself in to the police.

On Tuesday, police say they apprehended their suspect.

A 47-year-old Chatham man was transported to police headquarters, where he was held pending a bail hearing. He currently faces two counts of assault.
