Boot toss leads to charges

A local man faces assault with weapons charges after someone threw a boot at a woman Thursday evening.

At 9:33 p.m., Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance on Erie Street South in Merlin.

Officers learned a man and woman were arguing, but it escalated when the man threw a steel-toed boot at the woman, police say. Further investigation revealed other past incidents of assault.

A 39-year-old Chatham Kent man was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was held pending a bail hearing. He is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, break-and-enter and two counts of uttering threats.

Break-in arrest

Police say a man went where the courts said he wasn’t supposed to early Friday morning.

And now, a 35-year-old Blenheim man faces more charges.

Officers were called to an address on Dufferin Avenue in Chatham about 1:15 a.m. Friday morning. A man was observed climbing into a window of a residence using a ladder, police say.

Officers attended and quickly took the man into custody.

Police learned the man had been released by the courts with conditions prohibiting him from being outside his residence and being at any place specified individuals were known to live, work or attend school. The apartment was the residence of one of those named individuals, police say.

A 35-year-old Blenheim man was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was held pending a bail hearing. He faces charges of careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm, break-and-enter, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, and six counts of possession of a firearm/ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

The skipped-court-date carousel continued to spin in Chatham-Kent on Thursday.

It began about 4:45 p.m. when police responded to Wellington Street area in Chatham for suspicious activity and located the woman.

Officers confirmed she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in relation to an October 2023 drug investigation in Chatham.

A 29-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where she was held pending a bail hearing. She is currently facing the following charges: possession of a loaded restricted/prohibited firearm, failing to attend court, three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, four counts of careless storage of a firearm, five counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

About 5:20 p.m., police responded to Victoria Street in Wallaceburg to assist EMS with a man requiring medical attention.
