Suspect jumps into river, needs rescuing

After an attempt to flee Chatham-Kent police Tuesday morning failed, a man had to be pulled out of the Thames River.

Chatham-Kent police say an officer located a man on King Street East in Chatham about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday who was a suspect in a fraud investigation reported earlier in the day where a stolen credit can had been used at local businesses.

As the officer tried to stop and speak with the man, he fled, police say. The man jumped in the river attempting to escape but panicked and had to be pulled from the water by the officer.

The man was arrested is charged with unauthorized use of a credit card.

Man found with stolen ID

A wellness check Tuesday morning resulted in charges against a local man.

Police checked on a man about 6:35 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of a man staggering on the front lawn of a Grand Avenue East residence in Chatham.

Officers located the man and took him into custody for public intoxication. Upon a search incident to arrest, officers located identification that had been reported stolen from Tilbury on May 22.

A 41-year-old Chatham Kent man is charged with possession of stolen property.

B&E arrest

At 6:19 p.m., members of the Intelligence Unit located a man on Wellington Street East in Chatham matching the description of a man involved in several commercial break and enter investigations.

Through investigation officers confirmed identity and arrested the man.

A 27-year-old Chatham Kent man is charged with possession of a stolen credit card, theft, two counts of possession of stolen property, and four counts of break and enter.

Disturbance call leads to arrest

Shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to Grand Avenue West in Chatham for a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers learned a verbal argument between a man and woman escalated when the man assaulted the woman, police say. During the argument, the man also threatened to harm the woman.

Officers also learned the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in relation to a 2023 theft investigation. Upon a search incident to arrest, the man was found in possession of suspected methamphetamine.

A 36-year-old Chatham-Kent man is currently facing the following charges: assault, uttering threats, possession of a controlled substance, theft, two counts of mischief, and two counts of possession of stolen property.
