London crash sends three locals to hospital…and then court

A trio of Chatham-Kent residents is facing a slew of charges following a collision between a passenger vehicle and transport truck on Highway 401 in London at Highbury Avenue.

According to a media release from OPP’s Middlesex detachment, a total of 25 charges were laid in connection with the incident, including numerous firearms charges.

Police say the crash occurred shortly before noon on May 28. When officers responded, they saw a firearm in the vehicle while attending to an injured person. Two other passengers had initially fled but returned to the scene.

A search of the vehicle revealed six firearms and ammunition, police say.

A 34-year-old Wallaceburg man faces 14 charges related to the incident, including five firearms charges as well as impaired, careless driving and charges relating to driving while prohibited.

A Chatham woman, 39, and man, 32, both face several criminal charges relating to the firearms, including possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, and possessing a firearm a firearm knowing the serial number had been tampered with.

Each suspect is also charged with possession of stolen property.

All of suspects were arrested and held for bail.

The three were transported to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
