Vehicle stop leads to trafficking charges
A moving violation led to multiple charges against a driver and his passenger Tuesday night.
At about 11:30 p.m., an officer on regular patrol observed a vehicle drive through the intersection of Landing Pass and Grand Avenue East in Chatham. The officer pulled the vehicle over and discovered the driver did not have a valid driver’s license and was bound by several prohibition orders.
The officers conducted a search and located suspected cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and oxycodone with an estimated street value of $8,000. Officers also located a conducted energy weapon.
The driver and the passenger were arrested and transported to police headquarters.
A 52-year-old Chatham man is charged with failing to stop at a stop sign and driving while under suspension under the Highway Traffic Act. He was also charged criminally with unauthorized possession of a weapon, four counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order and four counts of possession of a controlled substance with the purpose of trafficking. He was held pending a bail hearing.
A 61-year-old Chatham woman is charged with four counts of possession of a controlled substance with the purpose of trafficking.
Early morning assault
At 4:15 a.m., Chatham-Kent police responded to Reaume Avenue in Wallaceburg for an assault investigation.
Officers learned a man and a woman were involved in a physical altercation where the woman was thrown to the floor.
The man left before police arrived.
At 1:25 p.m., police located and arrested the man. He was transported to police headquarters.
A 24-year-old Walpole Island man was charged with assault. The man is also facing the following charges from other incidents: failing to comply with a probation order, obstructing a police officer, escape lawful custody, failing to identify self and failing to stop. He was held pending a bail hearing.
Man turns himself in to answer to assault charges
A day after police opened an investigation into assault allegations, a local man turned himself in.
On Monday afternoon, police responded to Lorne Avenue in Chatham for an assault investigation.
Officers learned of an incident between a man and the victim that escalated into an assault. Further investigation revealed several historical incidents, dating back to 2019, where the victim was assaulted and their property damaged by the man, police say.
On Tuesday afternoon, a 25-year-old Chatham man attended Chatham-Kent Police headquarters and turned himself in. He is currently charged with three counts of mischief, three counts of assault and three counts of assault with a weapon.
Booze theft leads to charges
It took nearly a month, but police say they’ve tracked down someone who stole from a Chatham liquor store in late December.
On Dec. 27, police say a man entered the LCBO on Wellington Street West in Chatham, removed items from the shelves and exited the store without paying.
Video surveillance identified the man, and a warrant was issued for his arrest when he was not located.
On Tuesday morning, officers located the man at Princess Street and King Street East in Chatham. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters.
A 28-year-old Chatham-Kent man was charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
