Chatham-Kent’s quest to build a second regulation-sized baseball diamond is underway.
Following a motion from Chatham Coun. Marjorie Crew, council directed administration to work with and explore the possibility with the CK Field of Dreams committee.
Planning, feasibility and a potential location will be investigated, with a report returning to council in May.
According to Crew, the motion was brought forward as there is currently only one full-sized baseball diamond – Fergie Jenkins Field – and with the addition of the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers IBL team this year, there will be less access for local players age 14 years and up.
More flat-level accessible field space is also needed for Challenger Baseball programs, for players with cognitive or physical disabilities, the motion said.
The Field of Dreams committee is a joint effort between the Chatham Sports Hall of Fame and the Chatham Minor Baseball Association. If constructed, the new diamond will be open to all communities throughout the municipality.
