Thanks to new software incorporating the latest in GPS mapping, Chatham-Kent is upping its 911 response game.

According to a media release from the Chatham-Kent Police Service, the recently installed system optimizes call management with mapping that identifies and prioritizes calls throughout the municipality. The feature ensures that emergency lines are available for critical situations, preventing tie-ups that could hinder an immediate response from emergency services.

The software is being installed as part of the transition to the government-mandated next-generation 911 system.

CKPS public information officer Lynette Rosina said the new system allows 911 dispatchers to pinpoint particular incidents, while ensuring unrelated calls are prioritized, meaning no call will go unanswered.

Rosina said the system allows 911 operators to discern when a particular incident is generating significant call volumes and to make sure non-related calls from another geographic location are prioritized. Because dispatchers can select those non-related calls, it allows those calls to be answered in a timely fashion, ensuring that they are not held up in a queue.

The new system enables callers to stay on the line and to receive a message assuring them their call will be answered as soon as possible.

“It gives dispatchers more control over calls that they take first,” Rosina said, as they are able to see what calls they are referring to in real time. “It allows for better call management.”

When calling the non-emergency line, callers will be transferred to the emergency communications centre with a customized message. If it is an emergency, they are advised to call 911 directly.

The next-generation 911, referred to as NG 911, is being mandated by the Canadian Radio and Television Commission with a 2025 deadline. The upgrade means the new digital system will replace outdated analog systems.
