The Chatham Crush U18AA girl’s hockey team is making a powerful statement this October.
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the team is donning special jerseys to help raise awareness about the disease, contribute to ongoing efforts about research about breast cancer, promote early detection and support those devastated by the illness.
According to coach Diane Peters, Breast Cancer Awareness Month holds a “special place” in the hearts of the team, as well as its coaches and supporters. During the month, players hope to inspire the community and fans to join them in the fight against breast cancer.
The striking jerseys serve as a visible reminder of the importance of screening, education and support for those battling breast cancer.
“The young women are wearing these jerseys with pride,” said Peters in a media release. “Many of these women have a loved one who has gone through breast cancer, and by wearing the jersey, they are showing support and garnering awareness for all who are faced with breast cancer.”
Team captain Ashton Clark, 17, is hoping the jerseys bring heightened awareness in the community and in the sport.
“I am so honoured to wear the jersey,” said Clark. “Breast cancer affects so many women; we are playing for everyone that has been affected. We Want no one to fight alone. We want more teams in our league to be part of the cause.”
