Someone ran into a railway crossing Sunday evening in Chatham, rolled through a bean field and then tried to flee Chatham-Kent police on foot.
That ended with a teenager in handcuffs.
At 6:37 p.m., police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Park Avenue West in Chatham.
Police learned a pick-up truck struck the railway crossing at Park Avenue West and Degge Street.
The truck continued driving on Park Avenue West before entering a bean field and driving east.
Police responded, immediately located the vehicle, and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop and continued through the bean field, crossing over the roadway to a cornfield and hitting an apple tree, police say.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a short foot chase.
Police discovered the vehicle was stolen from a local business.
A 16-year-old Chatham youth was charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision, failing to stop for police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property. He was transported to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.
