A report of the smell of gas in downtown Wheatley was just a minor natural gas leak, fire officials say.
They got the call Sunday about 10:15 p.m. of a report of a suspicious odour in the downtown core, where a gas explosion destroyed three buildings in August of 2021. Rather than hydrogen sulphide emanating from the ground, this time around it was natural gas leaving from a gas meter on a building.
Initially, fire personnel investigated in terms of a ground leak, but after finding no indication, they went on to check the gas meters, finding the source.
Crews contacted Enbridge, and the leak was quickly fixed.
