After decades of housing drought, Wallaceburg may soon be home to a five storey 85-unit complex on the town’s south side.

The first step towards the development is expected to come before Chatham-Kent council Feb. 14. Officials will then consider severing a property on Base Line Road to create a new 5.4-acre building site.

The development, possibly the first of several buildings, will be known as Royal Ridge Residences and will feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom units and amenities such as an onsite gym.

The first building to be completed at 7030 Baseline Rd. could be finished within 12 months after planning requirements are met. Additional zoning amendments and site plan proposals must be approved before construction can proceed.

Mayor Darrin Canniff broke the news about the build on a local radio station Tuesday, saying there is significant pent-up demand for new housing in Wallaceburg.

“This is the first major housing development for the community in years and I expect it will be the first of many,” Canniff said, adding other projects are in the planning phase.

“I expect 2023 to be a banner year for residential construction in Wallaceburg,” he said.

The name of the developer has not been disclosed, however Canniff said the company has a good track record in Chatham-Kent.

“This is going to be a first-class development and an attractive option for residents,” he added.

  1. Nice news for Wallaceburg, only concern is “1&2 bdrm residences with a gym” I’m thinking these are not for young families. Hopefully the planning for the other developments are going to include 3 berms with a community feel. Oh and I’m a 58 yr old homeowner and feel a deep sorrow for our millennials.
