One man, one day, two arrests

In blackjack, doubling down can be a smart option for a gambler to increase his chances of winning. But it doesn’t work that way when running afoul of the cops.

Chatham-Kent police say a man effectively doubled down against them Monday, ultimately getting arrested twice in the same day.

Police say a man was released from court a year ago with several conditions. One of them was that he not possess any weapons.

Yet, on Monday morning, officers responded to an altercation in Chatham where the man brandished a knife while arguing with two men, police say.

The 44-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with his release conditions.

Police say he was again released from court with several conditions. This time, one of those conditions said he was not to attend the property where the altercation in the morning occurred.

However, police say that afternoon, the man returned to the property and was arrested again.

He has been charged with failing to comply with his release conditions and has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Child struck by vehicle

Yesterday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m., Chatham-Kent police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on North Street in Dresden between Holden Street and Wrights Lane.

Through investigation, police learned that a 9-year-old boy had been struck by a vehicle. The boy was transported to hospital for medical attention.

The collision remains under investigation.

Breach issue

A man was released from court in October with conditions not to communicate or associate with a specific woman.

Yesterday, police learned that the woman was attempting to communicate with the man through social media.

A 19-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and charged with two counts of facilitating a breach.

Crash leads to impaired charge

Yesterday morning, police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Princess Street in Chatham.

Through investigation, police believed the man was driving while under the influence and he was arrested.

The man was transported to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert conducted an evaluation. As a result, the DRE officer believed the man was impaired by a drug.

A 30-year-old Chatham man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited.

Hammer time

Yesterday afternoon, police responded to a disturbance at a residence in Chatham.
Through investigation, police learned that the man attended the home of a woman, with whom he was not to associate with. While at the home, the man damaged a vehicle in the driveway with a hammer.

Last night, police located the man and he was arrested.

A 57-year-old Chatham man was charged with mischief and two counts of failing to comply with his probation order. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Theft of trailer and aluminum

Sometime between Friday at 5 p.m. and Monday at 8 a.m., someone forced their way into a fenced compound on Payne Street. Once inside, the suspect(s) stole a utility trailer and approximately $500 worth of aluminum.

Yesterday afternoon, police located the stolen trailer, damaged, on Adelaide Street South.
