High winds Monday afternoon made battling a house fire on Middle Line a challenge for local firefighters.
According to Chatham-Kent fire officials, the fire broke out before 2:30 p.m. on Monday at 8067 Middle Line.
Three off-duty firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to rescue an occupant of the home from the second storey.
As crews from five stations started arriving, they saw the garage was engulfed in flames and the fire had extended into the house.
Heavy smoke and the high winds hampered firefighting efforts and reached the point where crews had to just fight to keep the fire from spreading.
Damage is estimated at $400,000.
The cause is undetermined.
