Chatham-Kent saw 17 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend along with a good chunk of recovered cases.

The cumulative total of COVID-19 infections now sits at 463, of which 30 remain active.

One person is currently hospitalized.

It is still unclear where 14 of the cases stemmed from, as CK Public Health is awaiting further information, according to its Monday afternoon update.

Outbreaks are still declared active for one place of worship, a congregate living setting, and a workplace.

The holiday season is quickly approaching as cases in Ontario and Chatham-Kent continue to climb. Dr. David Colby, Chatham-Kent’s chief medical officer of health said that its looking like Christmas won’t be a normal one this year.

“This is something that is cherished by so many, that it’s not something that we want to lose,” he said. “But, we have to be safe and we have to protect the vulnerable people in our society.”

Colby said residents should hold tight on the travel plans between jurisdictions or gathering in large groups,” he said at a press teleconference.

Vaccines are expected to become widely available in early spring, based on signals the medical officer of health is receiving from other national bodies, although it can’t be certain when one will definitely hit the market.

Colby said residents should consider postponing Christmas celebrations for a little while.

“It might be worth thinking about. In my profession, you have to be on call on Christmas; somebody has to work to take care of people in health care, and always in our house Christmas is when Christmas happens. Not necessarily on December the 25th. So, that is another approach,” he said.
