The municipality of Chatham-Kent recognized Transgender Awareness Week with a flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Centre Monday.

During the ceremony, CK Pride Association Vice President Marianne Willson said the support shown by the community and municipality “really makes a difference” and added, “We need to open the lines of communication.”

Chatham-Kent Coun. Brock McGregor said events such as the flag raising demonstrates in more than words that “Chatham-Kent is an open, welcoming community.”

The purpose of the week is to help raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues the community faces.

For the first time, Transgender Awareness Week flags are being flown at a number of municipal services centres across the community.

“I think it’s important that people in smaller communities realize that they are accepted and supported,” Willson said in a media release.
