The SIU has been called after a vehicle flipped over and a driver was seriously hurt in the wake of a police pursuit Wednesday night.

Chatham-Kent police say just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, an officer spotted a vehicle with expired plates heading eastbound on Oldfield Line southeast of Wallaceburg.

The officer pulled the vehicle over, but as he walked up to it, the driver sped off, police say.

The officer pursued, but soon broke off the chase, according to police.

Just before 7 p.m., another officer spotted the vehicle upside down in a field on Meadowvale Line to the north.

Both occupants of the stolen vehicle had to be taken to hospital. The driver, a 33-year-old man of no fixed address, suffered serious injuries and had to be air lifted to a London hospital.

The passenger, a 22-year-old Thamesville woman, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.

Police say the Special Investigations Unit, a civilian oversight agency called in when circumstances involving police result in serious injury, was contacted, but did not invoke its mandate to take over the investigation.

The Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Dan Carroll at dancar@chatham-kent.ca or 519-355-1092.
