Thieves in Chatham-Kent have been busy of late.

Sometime over the past week, someone broke into a Chestnut Drive residence in Chatham and stole jewelry. Chatham-Kent police say they also made off with a couple of mountain bikes from a shed.

Sometime Tuesday morning between midnight at 6 a.m., someone got into an unlocked garage on River View Line and stole a Stihl chainsaw and five gallons of gas, police say.

Between Monday at 8 p.m. and Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., someone forced his or her way into an Edgar Street residence in Chatham, doing about $300 damage in the process.

The thieves stole various items, valued at about $1,000, police say.

And in Wallaceburg Tuesday morning, a couple of guys thought it would be a good idea to steal two shovels from Wal-Mart.

Police say the men fled on bikes, but officers found them a short distance away and arrested the two.

A search of one yielded a quantity of meth as well.

A 29-year-old Wallaceburg man and a 31-year-old Walpole Island man are charged with theft and possession of stolen property. The Wallaceburg man is also charged with drug possession and failing to comply with a probation order.
