Sir: I was sorry but not surprised to hear of the pending closure of the excellent Gospel Text Bookstore, which my wife and I have patronized since we moved to Chatham in the spring of 2009.
We know all the people there very well, and Wayne and Helen Schwandt are members of our church.
I’m not surprised because it isn’t easy to sell books these days when you’re competing with the online booksellers. That’s why the big box stores often sell books with 25-per-cent discounts.
Before we moved to Chatham, we were living in Elliot Lake and I remember our pastor there talking about a trip to Chatham he had made “in about 2006,” and a “wonderful Christian book store” he had visited.
At that time we had no knowledge of Chatham, never having even heard of it. I later learned that Gospel Text Bookstore had been expanded and improved in 2005.
It’s wonderful how things work together for good.
