Cops arrest man armed with a gun, baseball bat

A Chatham man is in custody after allegedly threatening his roommate with a gun and smacking him with a baseball bat Tuesday.

Police say it began about 3 p.m. when a man went to his residence on Park Avenue West in Chatham that he shared with a roommate. He didn’t get an answer at the front door so he crawled through a basement window to get inside to gather some personal belongings.

He was met by the roommate, police say, who had a baseball bat in one hand and a firearm in the other.

The one man pointed the gun at other, police say, threatened him, and then hit him with the bat.

The victim left, but didn’t call police.

Five hours later, he returned and knocked on the front door. Police say the roommate met he man, and once again had the bat and gun in his hands, and threatened the man a second time.

At this time, the man left and called police.

With the help of a negotiator and the Critical Incidence Response Team (CIRT), police arrested the roommate at 12:30 a.m. this morning.

A 63-year-old Chatham man is charged with two counts of pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon, and two counts of uttering threats.
