School buses in Chatham-Kent had extra passengers yesterday as police conducted a school bus safety blitz.

C-K officers, and those of the OPP, were strategically placed on buses in the morning and afternoon to observe motorists’ actions around stopped buses.

Police say no one was seen disobeying any school bus signals while the kids were getting on or off the buses. However, several motorists did receive reminders to focus on the road.

Police say other road safety initiatives will continue throughout the school year.

Drivers are reminded to stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing and stop arm extended, regardless of speed limit or number of traffic lanes.

Failing to comply could result in a $490 fine and six demerit points.
