Yesterday around 12:30 p.m., police pulled over a vehicle on Queens Line after a traffic complaint about a vehicle swerving all over the roadway. As soon as the vehicle came to a stop, a woman left the vehicle, began yelling for help and took cover by the officer’s cruiser. As the man exited the vehicle in an aggressive manner towards the officer he was taken into custody for everyone’s safety.
Police learned the woman had been assaulted by the man earlier in the day and held in the car by her hair. The man also threatened the woman with a knife and she disclosed this was not the first time that she had been the victim of domestic violence as he’d assaulted her before and smashed her cell phone. The man was also suspended from driving due to unpaid fines.
The 37-year-old Chatham man has been charged with four counts of assault, two counts of failing to comply with release conditions, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, driving while under suspension and mischief under $5000. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
