A Chatham couple face charges of assault and break and enter as the result of a bizarre incident early this morning.
At approximately one a.m. the man and woman attended a building in Chatham in an attempt to locate a specific man. The man forced his way into an apartment only to find out by the homeowner it was the wrong one.
The pair then attended another apartment and entered through an unlocked door. As they located who they were looking for, a physical altercation ensued and the victim was assaulted with a piece of wood, golf club and child’s scooter.
Upon police arrival, the pair were observed fleeing the area at a high rate of speed. They parked a truck at the man’s home and continued driving in the man’s second vehicle. Around 1:40 a.m. police located the vehicle, initiated a traffic stop and the pair were taken into custody.
The victim was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance for medical attention.
The 31-year-old Chatham man has been charged with two counts of break and enter and assault causing bodily harm. The 33-year-old Chatham woman has been charged with break and enter and assault causing bodily harm. Both have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
