A 56-year-old Wallaceburg area man was arrested and faces a variety of charges after a short chase with police last night.
Just before 11:30 p.m. an officer was travelling eastbound on Baseline Road when he had to take evasive action to avoid a Chrysler Sebring travelling westbound.
The driver crossed over the yellow centre line as the vehicles passed each other. The officer turned around and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver continued, and upon approaching Murray Street, he swerved and struck a curb. The driver proceeded through the intersection and upon making a wide turn pulled into a nearby parking lot.
Through investigation, the officer believed the man was driving his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested. The man was transported to police headquarters for breath tests.
The man has been charged with having a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, driving while under suspension, operating a motor vehicle on a highway with no insurance and using plates not authorized for the vehicle.
He was released pending a future court date of February 12. His vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days as per the Vehicle Impoundment Program.
