Not a good track record recently for local thieves, as one went away empty handed, while another wound up behind bars.

Police say sometime between June 8 at 7 p.m. and June 9 at 7 a.m. someone managed to crawl under the fence around the garden centre at the Home Building Centre on Keil Drive in Chatham.

The intent was to steal cash from the register set up in the centre, police say. The only problem for the thief was that the register was empty.

The thwarted thief did about $20 damage to the lock, and left with nothing.

Police say they don’t have any suspects at this time, but if you have information on this matter, contact Const. John Hicks at 519-436-6600, ext. 82512.

While that thief got zilch, another one made off with a bike – briefly. Police say sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. on June 9, someone slid into a locked apartment on John Street in Blenheim and ransacked the place.

In the end, the thief made off with a bicycle, which was later recovered and returned to the owner.

If you have information on this theft, contact Const. Mark Smith at 519-436-6600, ext. 87162.

The theft of copper tubing from a Bloomfield Road residence in Chatham has led to charges.

Police say someone broke in and made off with the tubing.

A 27-year-old man is charged with break and enter, and possession of stolen property.
