Many people living in a home don’t always have the means and health required to keep their property in the best of shape. For those people, the Backyard Mission Project is heaven-sent.
For the last six years, First Presbyterian and First Christian Reform Churches have undertaken a joint mission project in Chatham. Over two days, a group of volunteers transform the outside of a house for a needy individual.

They have built wheelchair ramps and fences, painted, fixed eaves troughs, landscaped, and done general cleanup around a house. This is done free of charge as an outreach of love and compassion to the homeowner.
For this year’s project, organizers are looking for a homeowner whose home needs some repair. The candidates must own their home, live on the premises, and have homeowner insurance. Unfortunately, because of liability, project volunteers are not able to repair roofs and all work must be done outside the home.
If you have this kind of need because of disability or other circumstances or you know of someone that would benefit from this project, please reply in writing to: Backyard Mission Project, First Presbyterian Church, 60 Fifth St., Chatham, ON, N7L 4V7.
Alternatively, applicants can apply e-mail to info@firstchatham.org.
Include in your reply: the name and address of the individual(s); what needs to be done around the home; reasons why this would be a worthy project to be undertaken; some assurance of homeownership and home insurance; and whether you are the homeowner or are nominating someone else.
Project organizers will assess the submissions and notify the homeowner with the chosen project.
