An attempted traffic stop early this morning resulted in a police chase, $15,000 is damage and a mittful of charges for a St. Mary’s man.

Chatham-Kent police said an officer saw a car speeding on Richmond Street in Chatham about 2:40 a.m. The officer suspected the man may be impaired, and pulled over the vehicle on Queen Street near Wellington Street. As the officer walked up to the vehicle, the driver sped away.

A car chase ensued on King Street, and police say the man drove through a red light and a stop sign.

Officers again tried to stop the man on Longwoods Road. Police say he drove his car into the driver’s door of a police cruiser and then lost control, finally coming to rest in a field.

Police say the man was intoxicated and unco-operative. They took him to headquarters for a breath test, which the man refused to give, police say.

Damage to the man’s vehicle is estimated at about $10,000, and $5,000 to the police car.

A 28-year-old St. Mary’s man faces charges with failing to stop for police, impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, and dangerous driving.
