ARTspace is pleased to announce a new exhibition, “Trash & Treasure,” by Chatham artist Rebecca Crofts, on display Jan. 29-March 1 with an opening reception Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
“Trash & Treasure” is an exhibition of cigarette package monoprints. By taking an object that has been used and then discarded and carefully inking and printing it on paper and framing it, she changes the object entirely. This contrast creates a consideration for the viewer, what is to be kept safe, and what is meant to be thrown away.
“The lifespan of a cigarette is about three to six minutes. After the cigarettes are gone, the packaging is cast away often in the streets or along sidewalks and forgotten. The consumption of temporary objects is an obsession in our culture, and the products of this obsession fascinate me. What we have left over, what things are built to last; how this presumed trash can be looked at differently. I am interested in how that reflects upon my generation and the tension experienced between older generations and the material object.” –Rebecca Crofts.
Rebecca is currently attending H.B. Beal Secondary School where she is specializing in lithography and ceramics.
ARTspace is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and is located at 165 ½ King St. W. in Chatham. Admission is always free.
