Chatham-Kent firefighters couldn’t save a home that caught fire last night on Palmyra Road in Orford.

Fire crews from Orford, Ridgetown and Blenheim stations responded to the call just after 10 p.m., but had to battle the elements as well as the blaze, as the temperature had dipped to -13C at the time of the fire, according to the Chatham-Kent Fire Department.

Fire officials say a space heater and candles were in the area where the fire started.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $300,000. No one was injured.

Fire officials remind homeowners that heaters need to be monitored daily and shouldn’t be used if they have missing parts.
