The Chatham-Kent Domestic Violence Community Coordinating Committee (CKDV3C) will mark Woman Abuse Awareness Month with a threat assessment and management workshop Nov. 28 that will shed some light on violence against young women.

Paid registration is required by Nov. 21 and the $65 fee will include a continental breakfast and hot lunch. The workshop will be held at Lawson Hall, 304 St. Clair St. in Chatham from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dawn Novak, mother of Natalie Novak, a third year Ryerson student who was murdered by an abusive ex-boyfriend, will be one of the workshop presenters. Natalie’s parents, Dawn and Ed, were recognized by the Attorney General last April when they were presented with the Victim Services Award of Distinction for their unrelenting efforts in the prevention of relationship violence among young people.

Novak’s presentation is formed by deeply personal and painfully gained knowledge and insight on this issue. As part of her presentation, she will show the 30-minute film produced by the Novak’s: “If Only… Nat’s Story.” While in Chatham-Kent, Novak will also speak directly with young people, including Child and Youth Worker Accelerated Program students at St. Clair College in Chatham.

Tracey Marshall, president of Threat Management Matters Inc., also a presenter, has more than 20 years in law enforcement experience having served with the Toronto Police Service and Durham Regional Police Service. Most recently, Marshall worked as a detective in the Threat Management Unit. With specialized training in the areas of threat assessment, sexual violence, domestic violence, criminal harassment and threatening correspondence, she is qualified in the delivery of B-SAFER domestic violence risk assessment certification training.

In addition to these topics, Marshall’s presentation will address technology-based violence as well as workplace and honour based violence.  The CKDV3C is pleased that Marshall, a native of Tilbury, accepted the invitation to participate as a workshop presenter.
