Music for the Mind concert slated for Feb. 13

On Feb. 13, Music for the Mind (MFM) will let the music do the talking.

In its seventh year, MFM is running a band showcase at the Portuguese Canadian Social Club on Grand Avenue East in Chatham.

Three local bands – Love Muscle, Big Shiny Toons and 89 Next – will perform that evening, with all proceeds going to support mental health assistance in Chatham-Kent.

MFM organizer Elisha Banks said the winter concert is always a popular event.

“We’ve sold out every year. I think It’s a combination of things that bring people to the event,” she said. “That’s supporting the cause to get behind bringing mental-health initiatives into the community to allow people to access supports. And then there’s the music. Music brings people together. As many things about us are different, I think music is loved.”

MFM raises money to support programs at Family Service Kent, the KIDS Team Program, and the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent.

Banks thanks sponsors, patrons and the bands for helping to make this event happen, and for helping fuel the fundraising.

“All three bands are local and are amazing. They always show up for charities like ours and give back,” she said.

The public seems to enjoy the timing of the concert as well.

“This time of year is rough. It’s dark and grey; it’s not warm and uplifting. That impacts the mental health of everyone,” she said. “Having the event in February gives people something to look forward to. It’s a good-for-the-soul night out.”

Tickets are $25 each and are available by calling 548-886-0453 or by emailing [email protected].

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m., with DJ Shawn L kicking off the night.
