Monday Chatham-Kent police briefs

Of bicycles and graffiti

If you can’t steal a bike, why not spray paint a building?

That, apparently, was the mindset of a Chatham man Saturday afternoon.

It began shortly after 5:30 p.m. on St. Clair Street in Chatham. Police say a man tried to steal a bicycle from a local business. That attempt was thwarted by a complainant.

The suspect fled on foot, police say, but was later located by officers behind another local business, where he was found spray painting a wall.

A Chatham man, 29, is charged with theft and mischief.

Impaired charge

A little unplanned off-roading has resulted in a Tilbury woman facing impaired driving charges.

Police say they were called about an erratic driver shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday night on Queen Street in Tilbury.

According to police, the driver left the road and drove onto private property.

Officers tracked down the driver and determined she had been drinking.

They obtained two breath samples, police say, and both were well above the legal limit.

A Tilbury woman, 30, is charged with impaired driving.
