Failing, failing, failing to comply

It seems that not complying with court-dictated conditions and requirements was the theme of the day around Chatham-Kent Monday.

One incident resulted in police having to use pepper spray to subdue a suspect.

In that case, an officer spotted a man riding a bike on King Street near William Street about 11 p.m. last night. The officer recognized the man and knew he had been under a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew since Sept. 13.

As the officer told the man to stop, police say the cyclist instead tried to pedal faster, but was caught a short distance away and arrested.

He resisted to the point he had to be pepper sprayed, police say.

A 27-year-old man is charged with failing to comply and resisting arrest.

In another instance, a man was released from custody back in July with several conditions, one of which was to not contact or communicate with his ex-wife.

Yet between Oct. 12 and 20, police say he left five voicemails on her cell phone.

They tracked him down yesterday morning.

A 36-year-old Chatham man is charged with five counts of failing to comply.

And on Monday morning, officers arrested a 28-year-old Chatham woman on an outstanding warrant.

Police say in September of last year, the woman was released from custody for offences of breach of probation and four counts of failing to appear.

But police say in late August of this year, she failed to show up for court and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Officers tracked her down yesterday morning.
