An 18-year-old man is dead after a single vehicle crash in Charing Cross over the weekend.

On May 21, at approximately 3:14am emergency crews responded to the accident.

Chatham-Kent police say that after investigating, they learned the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed and going westbound on Middle Line through the village of Charing Cross with four youths in the vehicle.  The driver left the roadway, crashed through the fenced compound of a business on Charing Cross Road, and struck a large snow blower.  An 18 year old male was located on the scene and was without vital signs.  The male was transported to hospital by paramedics and despite resuscitation attempts by responders and medical staff, the youth was pronounced deceased.  The other passengers were also transported to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The 17 year old male driver also suffered non-life threatening injuries.  He was arrested and charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Fail to Provide Breath Sample and held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service will not be releasing the names of the persons involved at this time and wish to extend sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

The Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Unit continues to investigate the collision.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Doug Cowell at 519-355-1092.
