A man led police on a wild early morning chase through Chatham today.

Police say shortly after 2 a.m., an officer saw a vehicle driving erratically westbound on Longwoods Road east of Chatham. The officer went to pull the man over, but instead he sped off.

Police say he topped 140 km/h zooming down Grand Avenue East into Chatham, with police hot on his tail. He turned north onto St. Clair and hit the gas again, getting up to about 90 km/h, when, according to police, an officer tried to force the man to stop, only to see him swerve and hit the cruiser.

The man eventually pulled into the Real Canadian Superstore parking lot and again swerved into the cruiser.

He was quickly surrounded, police say, and officers ordered him to get out of his car.

He refused, and locked his doors. An officer broke the driver’s window and hauled the man out of the car, police say.

A 25-year-old Windsor man is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to stop for police, and resisting arrest.

Police say no one was injured in the chase, and damage to the cruiser is estimated at about $100.
